The Newport Visual Art Center will feature an exhibition of work by Oregon painter Henk Pander beginning in July. A Dutch-born artist trained at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, Pander's training provided him with skills relating to 17th century Dutch art and 20th century movements of Expressionism and Surrealism. He is known for creating works that challenge the status quo of modern art in the Pacific Northwest and has received numerous awards. "In his drawings, watercolors and oil paintings Pander depicts subjects ranging from the death of friends to erotic fantasies, from the wreck of the New Carissa to the ruins of Ground Zero and from the skylines of Portland and Amsterdam to abandoned airplanes and automobiles in the American West," writes Roger Hull in Henk Pander: Memory and Modern."His training provided him with skills that related to Dutch art extending back to the seventeenth century as well as to twentieth-century movements such as Expressionism and Surrealism." Watercolors and More will be on display until September 2.
