Approximately 20,000 Gray Whales can be seen as they migrate south along the Oregon Coast each December and January and during the peak of the migration, December 27-31, volunteer interpreters will staff 24 of the Coast's top whale watching spots during Oregon State Parks' Whale Watch Week. Gray Whales can be seen along the Oregon Coast starting in mid-December, as they migrate thousands of miles south from Alaska and northern waters to their warm-water breeding grounds off Mexico. During Whale Watch Week, trained volunteers will help visitors spot whales during Winter Whale Watch Week when during the peak of the migration, it's possible to spot about 30 whales each hour.
