When winter storms churn up the sand and offshore swells send buckets of flotsam to shore, almost every beach visitor does a little beachcombing along the ocean's edge to see what the tide has washed in. Starting in January, visitors and locals alike can learn how to hunt for agates, jasper, petrified wood and other coastal collectibles at a 2018 Beachcombing Clinic in Lincoln City, Oregon. The first 2018 Beachcombing Clinic is on Friday, January 26 at 9am.
After a winter storm on the Oregon Coast, the sand erodes to reveal a treasure trove of discoveries. Fossils in the form of petrified wood and shells are commonly found above the surface. But, "rockhounds" and amateur geologists seek more colorful prizes. Minerals in the form of agates and jasper are eagerly sought by budding treasure hunters. Regardless of what you find, the joy of walking on the beach is a treasure in itself.
The free clinics are located at the SW 33rd Street beach access in the Nelscott District of Lincoln City. All clinics last approximately two hours and begin with a brief orientation by local expert Laura Joki, followed by a guided beach tour. In addition to learning about local geology participants should prepare for an unforgettable beachcombing adventure. Questions and feedback is encouraged and the best part is taking home your found treasures. Public parking lots are at SW32nd and 35th Street, and also along SW Anchor Avenue. Attendees should plan to arrive 15 minutes early.
