Coos Art Museum (CAM) in downtown Coos Bay, Oregon presents Expressions West 2018, an exhibition of paintings by artists residing all over the western United States. The exhibition opens on April 27, with an evening reception and awards ceremony from 5-7pm. About 70 works of art in oil, acrylic, pastel or watercolor paint media will be on display until June 30.
Judging the 2018 Expressions West show is artist and arts administrator Archana Horsting. Horsting received a B.A. with honors from the University of California, Santa Cruz, studied art history at the University of Padova, Italy and practiced at Academia di Belle Arti di Venezia in Venice, Italy. Currently she is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Kala Arts Institute, an international artist's residency program in Berkeley, California. Horsting oversees all aspects of running Kala, including supervising development and programming. Kala serves 35,000 individuals yearly through artist residencies, exhibitions and community workshops. In addition Kala's Artists-in-Schools program provides curriculum-based visual arts education to public schools in Berkeley, Emeryville and Oakland.
During the awards ceremony, Ms. Horsting will present the prize awards for the competition. The three prizes are $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place and $250 for the third place award. Honorable mentions will also be announced during the ceremony. The awards ceremony begins at 6pm and CAM anticipates many of the participating artists will be in attendance. The public is invited to meet the artists and juror at the opening reception.
Expressions West is one of the premier annual exhibitions for Coos Art Museum. Tracing its roots to the Coos Artist League, active since 1950, the museum is a cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon's South Coast. Currently, CAM has six active galleries totaling 5600 square feet of display space and a growing permanent collection of mid-20th century and contemporary American art.
The museum occupies the historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building, 235 Anderson Avenue in downtown Coos Bay. Museum hours are 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Friday and 1-4pm on Saturday. General admission is $5. Admission for students and seniors is $2.
