#1: Shore Acres State Park
One visit during rough seas will easily reveal why any online image search for ‘Oregon storm watching’ yields numerous results for Shore Acres State Park. During big storms, mammoth crashing waves impact huge near shore rocks, sending enormous columns of water skyward that often reach heights double that of the cliffs themselves. At Coos Bay, detour off Hwy 101 onto the Cape Arago Highway and head to Shore Acres State Park, the former cliff top estate of a timber giant. Take the path to the observation shelter at the top of the cliff, an ideal place to survey all that nature has to offer in this spectacular place.
